Xurath
The Father’s Rune: the power of death, borne before the Rune Cycle began and bound forever to the birth of Varian rule.
CROWNFALLThe ancient powers
Before empires measured history, the runes placed the powers of life, death, fire, water, earth, shadow and time into mortal hands. Every age since has tried to possess—or destroy—them.
The Father’s Rune: the power of death, borne before the Rune Cycle began and bound forever to the birth of Varian rule.
The Mother’s Rune: the power of life, restoration and creation—the first counterweight to the Father’s dominion over death.
The Rune of Fire, carried by one of the first heirs. Its ancient blade is said to burn without fuel and call a dragon from the sky.
The Rune of Water. Its lost horn commands the deep and is remembered in stories of the kraken rising at its bearer’s call.
The Rune of Earth. Its staff can wake the ground itself and summon great serpents from beneath the sands.
The Rune of Shadow, intended for a fourth heir whose inheritance was nearly erased from history. In later ages, the Sangraals would claim it through Inquisitor Yarrik.
The concealed Rune of Time: a power capable of bending the path between what was, what is and what may yet be.
The beginning
The first powers belonged to the Mother and the Father. She bore Vitalis, the Rune of Life. He bore Xurath, the Rune of Death. Between them stood the oldest balance in the known world: creation and ending, renewal and dominion.
The first heirs
Their children became the first Rune Bearers. Fire passed to Zarryn, Water to Khalor and Earth to Gorrundur. Each bearer carried a different portion of the ancient power, and each left behind relics that survived long after their age.
Umbreath was meant for a fourth heir whose inheritance was nearly erased, while Equinox—the Rune of Time—was hidden beyond the histories written by later empires.
The first hunt
The family of Rune Bearers did not endure. The Mother became the Veyrun Hunter and turned against those who carried the ancient powers. One by one, she hunted and killed the bearers, transforming the first inheritance of the runes into the world’s oldest war.
At last, the Father killed her. From that victory he created the First Varian Empire, placing the law of an emperor above the power of the bearers. The Rune Cycle began, and the memory of the first family was recast as imperial history.
The masked order
Long after the first bearers fell, the runes remained. Their power survived in bloodlines, stones, weapons and relics scattered across the world. The Sangraal Order made their recovery a sacred pursuit.
Masked Inquisitors hunt bearers, fragments and artifacts wherever they surface. They claim the runes must be contained. Their enemies believe the Sangraals intend something far greater: to gather every ancient power beneath a single order and decide who is permitted to shape the next age.
